Recently bought a 1983 hunter 31 and have been doing a lot of work on her, the engine although working is extremely rusty, is there anything that can be done to solve this problem. i.e. sand down each spot and paint. Or is it just some thing that should just be left.

Time and patience is all it takes

Cleaned an repainted my 3QM30 recently, get a toothbrush size wire brush from the hardware store, couple cans of Brake Cleaner, and Yanmar Gray touchup paint. Place rags under the motor and work from the top down, one area at a time. Remove the rust and flaking paint with the wire brush then spray with the Brake cleaner which cleans the area of loose rust and oil leaving a clean paintable surface. Make sure you have good ventilation as the fumes get a intense in a small engine compartment. Good Luck

Rusty? You call that Rusty?!!!!

THIS is rusty! Check out photo #6 on my web site for the 'after' shot. And it took a lot more to clean it up, than Charlie's work. Nasty rust dissolving chemicals too. And like Hotrod Magazine says, some of it will always come back. Be prepared to always have to touch-up.

Looking at your motor reminds me of mine

when I purchased my boat. I had the engine pulled to replace the engine mounts, pulled the engine angle mounting backets sand blasted and coated with rust proofing. oil pan pulled replaced the pan gasket, rebuild fuel pump, new water pump, new engine exhaust elbow, main front engine gasket and on and on.. Next month a new "monel" engine drive shaft.. "Thanks Fred on the suggestion to use "monel" for the shaft. My engine was also very rusty but not any more so it can be done..
