Just talked to a broker about putting my '99 420 on the market. He said to check the engine mounts as "everyone" knows Hunter mounts rust out and fail. I had never seen or heard of such a thing but sure enough when I checked they were very rusty. I sanded down the two I could easily reach and they look okay to me. Comments from anyone?

They're Yanmar Mounts

They aren't Hunter mounts, they're Yanmar mounts. And..... lots of boats have Yanmar engines. Ask the dealer if the Yanmar engine mounts on the other boats get rusty. Gee, fail huh? Let's see, my boat is an '88 so that makes it 15 years old? The next time I check the oil and V-belt I'll have to start checking motor mounts too? One way to reduce the amount of rust is to capture any liquids that come out of the engine in clear plastic hoses and drain them into a plastic bottle, like a water bottle. I only have one motor mount with any rust and it's from the early days before I put hoses on all the pepcocks, etc.

check the broker

Greg, with out being there and hearing the brokers attitude about Hunters I question his disposition toward Hunters. Was this aragance or genuine concern? As others have stated they get rusty and they are Yanmar mounts not Hunter, this happens to other manufactures mounts also. I question a broker who paints a broad picture that "everyone" knows.Yanmar makes a very good engine mount and is a great product. It sounds like (to me anyway)that this broker could have a negative predisposition toward Hunters, however you would be the best judge as you were there. My point is that I want a broker who is going to aggresively push and sell my boat, not just list it and hope it sells.I would talk with some other brokers.

Wrong broker

My Hunter 380 Went for a full year without a single offer. I changed brokers and within 45 days the boat was sold and closed. The first broker told me EXACTLY the same thing about my engine mounts. It is my opinion that if the broker doesn't believe in the quality and value of your boat they will NOT sell it.

Most of the rust comes from the vacuum break leaking. Replacing it with one (like a Vetus) that you can run a hose from to the bildge helps a lot and keeps the salt off the electrical and other engine parts too. Other than that, when you check the oil, give 'em a shot of rust preventative. The surveyor tagged me for a rusted mount on my last boat. I just cleaned the rust off and repainted them. Hardly a Hunter-only problem. RD

Mine needed to be replaced

one was broken, the others in not very good shape. Luckily this was caught by my pre-purchase survey and figured into the final price. Of course my boat is 1979
