Has anyone had any experience with the Rustoleum Marine Paints?

I was looking for a topsides paint to mix anti-skid additive in and saw the Rustoleum brand prices and was curious...

Any thoughts? Sorry if this topic has been discussed before, but in all honesty, the search feature on this forum isn't that great.

Not exactly marine paints, but I was pleasantly surprised that Rustoleum improved their regular paint formula since I last used it several years ago. I painted my trailer with Rustoleum recently and their product dries much harder and with better gloss than the Rustoleum of the past. It used to remain tacky or soft for up to a month after application. My point is that the company is being progressive in its product development.

Neal, I can't recall Rustoleum in particular being brought up in the last year. But from MY experiences, I like the stuff just fine, and use it frequently. I'm now prepared for the outcry, and dissension that I will now receive for being so blasphemous, but when it doesn't warrant it, paying a fortune for the "marine" product is sometimes just a rip. Don't get me wrong, I'm still using Axo-Nobel for a helluva lot, mostly when I'm working on these 6 or 7 figure boats, and I doubt if I WOULD use Rustoleum on a lot of it. But my boats, well, I can be kind of cheap. And it works very well.

Bottom paint

Friend of mine bought and applied rustoleum bottom paint last year, we spent six and a half weeks sailing in the keys last winter after he had applied the paint.

While I had never seen and didn't know they even made bottom paint I have to say it was impressive. It's still is doing its job we'll and holding up just fine after a year of use in both salt an brackish water.

I know you were not talking about bottom paints but just happen to remember and thought I'd toss it out there.

Thanks for the input. I have spoken to some locals that have also used it with the non-skid additive, and they were not happy with the long term results. Color fade, poor long term adhesion, and VERY long drying times...sometimes measured in weeks, not days.

I think we are going to go with the Interlux Interdeck. I like the texture. I was hoping that someone here might have experience with this product (I know, now I am getting really annoying) and might advise me if 1 quart of white with a pint of Brightsides blue poly for color added would be enough to do all the non-skid areas of a Catalina 22 not including the cockpit floor, poptop slider roof and forward hatch top (and possibly minus the whole poptop area too).

Thoughts?

I would be hard pressed to say that you had enough, even with the addition of the mix,(3 pints total). Maybe one coat very thin. But try it. If it's not too far from the paint store, you can always add to it. But I really don't think that will cover it well though.

As far as drying times go, there is a product called -Japan Dry- that will speed up your drying times. I like to use it if rain, or cold is going to impede on my flash, and tack times. If MY little rinky-dink hardware carries it, I can't help but think your nice Ace down there does.

Yeah they do. I can always dump a bit of catalist in it to speed things along too. Yeah, to be on the safe side I may buy 2 quarts and call it good. We will see. Thanks all for the input.

My experience with Rustoleum anti fouling paints is quite the opposite. As a hull cleaner, I find this product to have rather inferior anti fouling properties (when compared to the better competition) and would never recommend it to a customer.

Lost the gloss in my fiberglass that I couldnt restore with fine wet sanding. Went for broke with a cheap harbor tool and freight spray gun and rustoleum marine topside paint that i picked up at Lowes. I got fantastic results! (but I also wore out my arms doing extensive prep work & several coats with extreme fine sanding in between.) She went from dull to looking like a new boat!
