Perhaps using a dinghy to test the skills would be an alternative. The principals are based on use of a right angle triangle. Boat comes into dock. The vertical height is the edge of the boat. The base is thenline from the cockpit to the dock cleat and the hypotenuses is the line running from the cleat to the boat just beyond the boats pivot point. The boat stops moving forward when it reaches the base. When I move my base from the stern cleat to the starboard winch the boat only advances to the winch. You can within reason move this point forward but not too much or you loose leverage. It just becomes a midship line to a dock cleat.
