Rust Stains

I have a severe rust stain where the gelcoat has cracked around a bolt head. IG takes out some (probably chalky pores) and a phosporic acid based "rust remover" slightly bleached the beige gelcoat non-skid. I have heard about a product called "Misty" that I will try and I know that Majica (from Sailnet) works well on rust-stained concrete. Any other suggestions? Jim Willis

Cheap and worth trying.

Jim: Here is something that is cheap and worth trying. It is called CLR (stands for Calcium, Lime, Rust). You can find this in most stores like Kmart, Walmart or grocery stores. I know that it works wonders in the bathroom on the Calcium and Lime buildup. Not sure how it works on rust but worth a look.

Rust Aid

I use Rust Aid, which is avaiable at Home Depot. It works on rust stains, ICW "smiles", and the stain from my AC water outflow.

Steve saw your posting on rusty sails could try!

I have CLR , we have rust aid in local store and misty in a local boatyward. I lost my tube of majica years ago but it really worked great on concrete. I am now in process (with terrible glitches) of passing over MO shipment to mainland fulfillment. I hope to then have time to do some more "academic" stuff like the rust comparison. Perhaps several of us could compare notes like the old non-skid test. ANy ideas? Thanks JimW

Have you tried FSR?

Jim - I have used FSR (Fiberglass Stain Remover) by Davis with some success on rust stains on the hull - it's a blue gel you rub on and just rinse off after a few minutes. You'll probably need to try repeated applications to get results on a serious stain but it's worth a try. Then again, IG pink is probably better and you wouldn't be posting this inquiry if that worked. Best of luck - let us know what works! Trevor

FSR

I've had good success with FSR (gelified oxalic acid) but it didn't do much on the rust stains for me. Then again, they were REALLY bad stains! LaDonna

I had some really bad river water stain on my H26 thaT i tried everything on. Then my brother brought out som BKF, sprinkled alittle on a damp rag, ran small cicles very lightly and it came clean. It also removed several rub marks I could n't get off too. It's cheap and worth a shot. Good luck!
