Rust Stains. . .

When I brought Katia up from Mexico and was at sea for a couple of
weeks she developed minor rust staining on the hull below the shrouds
and below most of the forward (underwater) lifeline stanchions. In
Ensenada I stopped a day and got the teak oiled and the hull cleaned
up. . .the fellow used some sort of a chemical cleaner to take the rust
stains right off. Fast forward a couple of years, now it's time to
haul out and buff and wax the hull, paint the bottom (I've kept it
scrubbed off under water) and grease the prop. She has new rust
streaks under the shrouds again. I've tried oxalic acid to no avail.
So what is the magic chemical?
Thanks in advance. . .Ken Preston
PS--had a fabulous sail last weekend. . .must have been a frontal
passage or something, I kept getting gusts that put the rail way under
and splashed water on the lee windows. . .with two reefs in the main
and six rolls in the jib! I swear she was surfing on the little chop.

Hi Ken

Glad some of us is getting some sailing!! I spent Sunday anti-fouling someone else's Vega so I will now have to do the same for mine n the next couple of weeks!

I would be worried about the rust stains on the capshroud chainplate area as this means there is something that is not 316 Stainless, any idea what it could be? Best to check.

I am sure the cleaner used is Oxalic Acid, perhaps in a stronger solution? Mabye some kind of cutting compound could also be used.

See ya

We also use a form of Phosphoric acid known locally here as Dairy Scan. Farmers use it in milk tanks so can be bought from good farm supply depots. Just dilute approx 10:1 and leave a few hours and then wash off. All yellow and rust stains vanish like magic!

Cheers,

When I hauled out last Dec and attempted to remove stains etc...one of the women in the yard told me about SnoBol

Hi Robert;

nice to see you here.. and who knows- some day we might
even meet face to face....:)

You're so right- SnoBol is the best thing for getting rid
of stains. I use it every haul-out and in between. And so
does every one in the marina where I'm keeping my Vega.

Sailing has been great lately. I only wished I had more
time.I used to have more time when I was still working for
a
living... now I'm retired and work more than ever- don't
get paid- but love it! (I'm helping students with their
master
and/or thesis papers)

take care... happy sailing... Wilhelm, V-257

Ken: No answer for your stains, but I'm glad to see that you still have
your Vega. Hope that the window gasket replacement went according to plan.
