My friend has a 35ft Beneteau and he found rust on the keel joint. He was wondering if he had to remove all of it or if there was something he could spray on it.

Rusty krust keel

Amy, Your friend will have to get the rust off by sanding, wire brush(powered) or sand blasting. Then paint, right away with a metal epoxy primer (intelux 2002e) or fill with epoxy (west system). The rust won't go away with out some elbow, but if done right it shouldn't come back. Never put bottom paint on bare steel you will have a major problem with disimilar metals, ie; copper and steel, always use an epoxy primer.

is it a iron keel?

if it is an iron keel that might be the culprit, but if not then it is likely from the keel boats which means the hull to keel joint sealant is compromised. Removal of the keel and rebedding is the option in that case. Also while removed check the keel bolts for stress corrosion cracking. Dave
