Hi, I have some rust on the deck of my Ranger 26. I have tried everything to get rid of it but it just seems to get bigger and bigger. Any suggestions. Would CLR be ok to use?

Did you try On-Off on the rust stains?

I used this product on rust stains on a friends boat (after some bozo had used steel wool for something) and the rust flecks came right up. Apply with a paint brush, let sit about 10 seconds and wipe up. Read/follow directions on label for this stuff as it is quite strong.

Is it safe around metal?

Is it safe aroun d metal or paint? Or do I have to tape everything up.

Look at the ingredients in CRL. If I recall

it is citric acid and sulfamic acid. Oxalic acid will remove rust stains and will bleach wood. Phosphoric acid will convert rust to iron phosphate which is black and insoluble. Sodium Hydroxide is used for descaling steel. Avoid any compounds containing chlorine.

Is that Rust or Rusty on Deck?

Mike: I would try the CLR first. I assume that you have some already, so why not try it before you spend more money on something else. Most of these products have some sort of acid in the. I think some of the other options just contain higher concentrations of acid.

On-Off will mess with your metal

if you let it stand long enough. Therefore, tape off adjacent metal fittings and apply carefully with a paint brush. There is a gel version and a liquid version. The liquid version will run whereas the gel will likely not run as much. Read the product label. Your mileage may vary.

ON-OFF

Straight from the bottle to remove stains from an adjacent boat owner who decided to grind a steel hull next to me in the yard. Pour, scrub and hose off. Goes fast, don't turn your back on it. CLR didn't work.

Rust Removal on Boat

I use a product that is found in the laundry section at most grocery stores. It's call WHINK. Just apply straight and let it sit a couple of mins. Wash off. Don't get it on your hands or clothes. I save the On/Off for barnies.

I've had good luck removing rust stains

with West Marine Fiberglass Stain Remover (Model 364069). I used an old electric tooth brush and it worked well. See link for some good info on other products and techniques.

just like Warren says. No rubbing, no scrubbing required -- right up my alley!:)

i've used muriatic (pool) acid *POP

you can dilute it but be very careful of breathing it in and using it in enclosed spaces. it rinses with water and all it will do to the enviroment is lower the ph in the water. it wont hurt clean metal but will eat oxidized metal of all kinds

Simple Oxalic acid will do if its rust or tannin

found in 'miracle' cleansers: Bar Keepers Friend, Zud, etc. etc. Just pour on then wet-out and let sit, dont rub, then rinse. Or you can buy oxalic acid (wood bleach) in a paint or hardware store.

Oxalic Acid

When I had my big woodworkin business in Little Rock, I also did a lot of refinishing. I bought oxalic acid in a powder/crystaline form. I would take a small amount and make a thick paste with it and paint it on the surface.. Then put a damp rag on top and use a clothes iron on low heat just to kind of warm it up. Then clean it up. This was used to remove the black ring on oak furniture caused by someone leaving a metal can on the surface. Tony B
