Rust around rudder Pintles

I have a 2022 Capri 22 that was only in the water for a few months in the fall and some (significant?) rust stains formed around the pintles on the rudder. I took the pintles off and it seems like the rust is starting at the pintles themselves. Not sure if I should try to seal them to the rudder with something (no sealant was on them) or if I should try to polish the surfaces of the pintles and or treat them with something to prevent this next season.
Any ideas? Also there was some moisture trapped behind the pintles and in the drill holes when I removed them. I am a little concerned that the foam core is getting water in it.

Not sure what to do about the metal... it should not have done that if it was quality stainless... but Barkeeper's Friend will get the rust stain out of the gel coat.

You can find it at Lowes and sometimes Walmart.

I think your concern is warranted. There seem to be cracks around the mounting area. Do you have a plan to dry the inside of the rudder? Screws certainly needed to be sealed. I'm at sea about underneath the pintle flange. If those are cracks and you do not choose to repair them, then yes use a sealant like butyl tape. If the area is sound then maybe not.

I was also thinking butyl but since that moves constantly, I was thinking maybe 4200 would be better. ????

If it is not sound, you may want (need) to grind out all of the mushy stuff and fill it back in with wetted chopped mat. Then paint it with barrier coat followed by a hard enamel paint (auto paint or rustoleum will do).

The photo may look worse then it is, after cleaning up the rust stains it looks fine, no cracks. There is a pencil mark still there from when Catalina drilled the holes. That may be what you are mistaking for a crack. I may just try to run a vacuum hose at the holes for alittle bit to remove some moisture. Then I think I am going to sand/polish the pintles because they seem to have some rough edges from the cutting or stamping process when they were made. finally I think that I will seal everything with 4200 and I think that may make a big improvement. Upon further inspection I think the rough surfaces are causing the rust to start to form.

Sounds like a solid plan. After shop vaccuming the holes... you may want to put a little acetone in there. Acetone and water are miscable (will dissolve into each other) and that will help drive off any residual water. You can find Acetone at Lowes or Autozone etc. Don't shop vac the acetone... it is flamable and I'd worry about sparks from the electric motor of the shop vac. Just let it air dry for a few days... then maybe warm it all up with a hair dryer to drive off the last bit of water.

That crack looked like a pencil mark to me too.

If sand or use an abrasive polish on the SS, it will need to be passivated again. There is a SS polish, Spotless Stainless (Amazon link) that will clean and passivate the SS.

Hardware store SS fasteners (18-8) will rust in salt water, use 316 stainless to be more rust resistant.

The prep work is open to discussion but to avoid a repeat of the corrosion problem again after it goes back together, the area between the SS flange and the FG surface must be 100% sealed as you are dealing with SS crevice corrosion. Seal with 4200 as per @rgranger 's rec. as butyl will shift and open the area to corrosion again.
