Hi Chris, I've never seen a sailboat with the...

backstay running through the boom. Do you mean topping lift? Unless a boat uses an adjustable back stay most are attached rigidly to the stern using various hardware. Terry

What lake are you on?

Many years ago I paddled the entire Belgrade lakes system including the Belgrade stream. Always enjoyed it up there. I just spent a few days of vacation in Southwest Harbor where we rented a cal 25c for a day. Great experience except the lobster pots were very un-nerving. I don't think we understand your question. Lets try working on one question at a time. By way of definition the back stay goes from the top of the mast back down to a point somewhere near or at the stern of the boat. The topping lift, on the other hand is just a line that runs from the top of the mast to the aft end of the boom to support it when there is no mainsail raised to hold the boom up.

Typically on the H23

The three sheaves at the rear of the boom accommodate the topping lift, which exits at the mast with a couple of feet of tail ending in a stopper knot; the reefing line, which also exits at the gooseneck with sufficient line to allow the sail to be fully raised; and the outhaul. The three jammers at the mast end of the boom allow you to operate the lines from the mast, all in one place. If your boom is empty and you want to run lines, remove the boom from the boat and use a light line with a small weight to go through fist, starting at the mast end. The boom will need to be held almost vertical and wiggled an rolled about to guide the line through. Do it three times, once for each set of sheaves.

i guest i mean the topping lift

i am talking about the topping lift i do have three slots in the boom the center one is a wire for the outhaul of the sail so the third line is the reefing line my other question is can i run a line for the topping lift in the boom and have a shackel os i can connect it to the line off the boom i plan to trailer the boat and i would like to make setup easyer if everything is all setup in the boom

An Idea for you

You're right about the sheaves at the end of your boom. One for the outhaul, one for the first reef, another for the second reef. I believe there is a small tab with a hole in it there also. If not you can fake it for what I'm going to suggest. The topping lift is a major help in that it holds the boom up after the sail is dropped. Very convenient, but not standard equipment on an early Hunter. Because of the frequency that you trailer I'm going to suggest a simple Topping Lift. Your easiest bet would be a line (it does not need to be steel cable) running from the top of the mast to a small, self cleating 4 to 1 tackle that would then clip onto the end of the boom with a small stainless caribiner or similar snap hook. It would be simple and easy to connect after raising the mast and could be adjusted to the exact position where you want the boom to hang. When the mast is down it would be snugged alongside of the mast. The lake. I spent MANY summers paddling and sailing on Great Pond. I learned to sail in an area of the lake now referred to as Loon Cove. I remember seeing Loons there diving within about 10 feet of my boat in the evenings. Have you ever seen a chart or map of the lake with depth and details? Usually fishing maps sponsored by local businesses. I have a very old one for Moosehead but that won't do me much good on Great Pond!

Hi Chris, check out the Photo Forum...

link that I inserted below that works well on our boat. Just another alternative to consider. Terry http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/display.tpl?folder=73319661009&fno=17

Why a 4-1 Tackle

Why do you need a mechanical purchase on your topping lift? That seems like a lot of stuff to be flopping around when the lift is slacked for sailing... My topping lift goes from end of boom - sheave(top of mast) - bottom of mast - turning block-spinlock or equivalent cleat. The H23 boom ends mid-cockpit at a height of about 4.5' from the floor, i wouldnt want to have anything un-necessary hanging from the end of it.

In my Photo Forum article I talk about ...

the need to free up a sheet stopper for the spin halyard. When the working end of the topping lift came through the sheet stopper I could use the winch power to lift the boom off the SS arch. Moving the working end to the boom required the blocks to give me enough purchase to lift the boom. It is pretty heavy. Terry
