Running Rigging Replacement

My current rigging for the main sail and genua consists of a steel
cable with approximately 7 meter polyester rope at the end. The latter
part needs replacement. Any ideas on whether it is better to just
replace the polyester rope at the end or replace the entire
steel/polyester combination with a single piece of marlowbraid or
dyneema. If so, what size to take (given constraints on maximum
thickness to fit at top of mast).

Hi Maarteen

I have replaced the running rigging on many Vegas and have found the best is
as follows:

Main Halyard = 10mm Braid on Braid Pre-stretched Polyester
Genoa Halyard = 10mm Braid on Braid Pre-stretched polyester
Spinnaker Haylard = 8mm Braid on Braid Pre-stretched polyester
Topping lift = 6mm or 8mm Braid on Braid Pre-stretched polyester
Main Sheet = 10mm Braid on Braid Pre-stretched polyester
Genoa Sheets = 10mm or 12mm Braid on Braid Pre-stretched polyester
Spinnaker Sheets/Guys = 6mm or 8mm Braid on Braid Pre-stretched polyester

You can always go to Dyneema for the halyards but the extra cost is
prohibitive and teh rope is very hard to handle. The 10mm works well on the
mast sheaves and does away with the steel lines which tend to eat the
sheaves. When I hoist the mainsail I leave it for a fe wminutes then tighten
again to take in any further stretch. My favourite make or Braid on Braid is
English Braids, nice to handle and easy to splice.

Hope this helps.

Steve:
Is your British "braid on braid" the same as our American "double
braid?
