My H23 does not have a running masthead light. Has anyone added this light to their mast? How did you fish the electrical wire down the mast? Is the H23 mast filled with foam? Any help or comments will be welcome. Thanks, Bill Leathen H23 Kukana III. Lake Onalaska, WI.

Re: Running Lights on H-23 Mast

Bill, Just last week I updated all of the wiring inside of my mast, both VHF and Electrical. The process is unbelievably simple. If you have existing wiring, you'll need a small roll of line and some electrical tape. Lay the line beside the wiring, tape it, and pull it back through the mast. Reverse the process with the new wiring. If you don't have existing wiring, go to The Home Depot electrical department and buy a 50' roll of Greenlee fish tape. It is thin enough to get through the mast and is somewhat flexible. You'll need a flashlight. Mine was not filled with foam, so the process was very smooth. There was not ample space on the mast head to place a new light and antenna. So I cut a plate out of 1/4" aluminum, drilled the holes accordingly for the wiring and mounted it to the top of the mast. On the plate I mounted the light and antenna. Just remember to mount the antenna base behind the light. I have photo's of the finished product. Any more ?'s write me. gkc1068@aol.com

More questions about my project

One of my concerns is how high above the deck I should put the light. I told the Huter rep at the Strictly sail Chicago boat show that I planned to put the light about 6" above the spreader. He suggested I put it below the spreaders. I wonder if he knows something about the mast that if the holes for the light are higher on the mast, it will weaken the mast. What do you think? My other question is if I should make it a combined running light and deck light. Some of the Oday 25's at the club have the combination so that they can light the deck in the dark. Here again the Hunter guy said the light was a bad idea because it ruins your night vision. I agree, but there are times when working on deck is important. I am on the fence on this idea. H23 Steaming Light

My H23 had a steaming light on it's Kenyon mast when I bought it. It is located a little below the spreaders.
