I have a 87 28.5 that I have partially winterized. I am scheduled to be hauled the first week of January and it's a 3 hour sail to where I'm gonna leave it. I've bypassed the water heater and have drained it. Question is can I still use the engine without any water in the water heater??? Thanks for your help. Michael Mathis

Bypassed the H2O heater?

I'm not sure what you've done and you might need to detail what you've drain regarding the water heater. The "frestwater" side or the pre-heater antifreeze line that comes off the engine. I have 28.5 w/2GMF. There is an antifreeze filled hose that comes off the front top of the engine and runs off and thru the electric water heater- effectively acting as a preheater. I noticed on mine that the preheater line had a crappy shunting valve to inhibit flow and got rid of it as the hoses had vibration/friction wear at the point where the line ran thru the ribs and had started leaking. I moved my water heater from the forward-center under the dining seat to the aft area of my lazarette locker and will eventually run the preheater (loop) hoses to that area -so presently my "preheater hose" is emasculated. I have a short 2.5 ft hose from that supply on the front of the engine and have it simply loop back to the engines preheater return "socket" located a few inches from the supply - thereby "short circuiting" the preheater feed to the water heater. Did you drain the heater of "fresh water" or attempt to drain your preheater line? Please explain. I've not had any problems running the "loop" as I described above. Jim McCue

Fresh water

I disconnected the fresh water lines(in and out) and connected these two lines together to bypass the heater. I then drained the fresh water out of the heater itself using the petit cock. Again the question is whether or not I can still run the engine. Mike

Mike, I have bye passed by "house hot water" at my water heater two years ago as part of my winterization, and never reconnected it. I have run for two years with the engine loop intact, which means the engine fresh water is still circulating thru the hot water heater but the heater does not have any "house water" in it. We primarily day sail so having house hot water was not very important. We do however use the house water system, but only cold water. I have not had any engine issues with this ste up. The engine heat exchanger does the majority of the heat transfer to maintain operating temperature. Oh by the way I have an 86 28.5 with a 2GM20F diesel which runs perfectly. Kevin
