I am sure that this is an easy task, but seem to be having trouble, I need to run a new out haul line through my Zspar boom. what is the best way to get the line through the boom??? I have tried twine, with a weight on the end, the trouble seems to be at the front end of the boom, where the line comes thru the some kind of footed locking cleat. cant seem to get the line in to a certain hole, any ideas???? also, is the out haul to run to the mast and tie off? or run back to the cockpit? i am sure that it is user choice. thanks

Tying Off on the Mast is OK, But...

...I also like Don's graphic! It's the same as I have on mine (Isomat)!

Pop the Rivets

When I did mine last winter, I took the rivets out and removed the castings from both ends of the boom. Running the lines was then not a problem. It also was a chance to realign and grease the sheaves.

use a fish tape to pull a line through

I can't understand what a weight will do on a horizontal boom.

Fish tape is good

You can also push stiff wire like solid copper or mechanics wire through and pull it back with that.

Tom, it depends on whether you wish to have a "purchase"

on your outhaul. In my Z-Spar (on a Hunter 280) there is a block arrangement inside the boom that provides a 2 (or 3?) to-one purchase. Otherwise, a straight thru run is all that would be needed and the earlier posts give ideas on that. As an aside, even if the boom does not have an internal purchase and you wish an adjustable outhaul, you can inexpensively rig a set of blocks between the main clew and the end of the outhaul to provide the same adjustability.
