ABYC = CO

This is not a law, USCG CFR'S yet, but is recommended on all yachts now, and the coasties have been know to follow the ABYC tests. A diesel heater is likley the safest, I am 'paranoid' of sleeping with ANY heater on, prefer a down comforter meself. I always took the chill off with the propane stove, then turned it OFF, but you need more below freezing. Peter in Sydney, love Victoria, and I lived in Banff so bicycled into Calgary down the Bow river, a bit over a hundred K. You Kanucks know that @ minus 40 centigrade and farinheit cross? Yes, they are the same temp, learned that while on a seismic crew working in the Canadian arctic above Resolute Bay.

How about wood?

Years ago I had a Catalina-25 which had been fitted with a Dickinson wood heater on the saloon bulkhead. I could burn very small "logs" (actually, thick twigs) scrounged from the woods adjoining my marina -- or even charcoal. It was very easy to light (just a little tiny bit of one of those fireplace lighting logs); very warm; very cozy; and the flames gave a wonderful appearance to the cabin. The only down side was removing the ashes -- but that wasn't too bad. The stack exited the cabin roof and into a Charleynoble about six inches above the exterior surface. Operating while underway was no problem. One season I happened along some apple tree branches. Wow, did that smell terrific! When ready to hit the sack or leave the boat, I'd simply close up the doors on the "fireplace" and the fire would go out in minutes, oxygen starved. Opening the air intake just a little tiny bit and a piece of 2X4 about four inches long would burn for several hours.

Gary - re: "Outcome"

Sorry Gary but your "Outcome" is really unrealistic "training" for Alaska (i.e., "tailwind"). For realistic Alaska training you're just going to have to do it over again until you have HEADWINDS! Forecasts that are a "tad" off is okay but that tailwind and light air stuff is way too cushy. And.... now that there appears to be a chance of snow with stronger wind in the forcast is a excellent opportunity. Gota get a good feeling for that chill-factor! :)

An Invitation, John

I agree that Sunday wasn't much of a test. Would you and Ingrid like to come up for a test in the snow sometime this week? :) Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5
