I am considering a trip from Florida (most likely Fort Lauderdale) to Freeport Bahamas in a H26 around June 2002. Has anyone made a trip like this? Does anyone know of a website for information and maybe a flotilla? This time of year we start dreaming don't we. Dean “Chateau de Vent”

Book...

Hi Dean, You can order Roger Mummah's book "Cruising Endless Summer-Exumas" at: http://www.1stbooks.com/ Use the search by author on the name: Mummah It provides a wealth of info for someone considering a crossing to the Bahamas as well as an account of their first trip over. Fair winds... Tom

Jump-ups

Every year the Bahamas government tourist bureau sponsors several accompanied flotillas across the Gulf Stream. I believe they are called Jump-ups, and there are activities and parties on arrival. Check their website. Sorry, no URLs -- just use a search engiine.

Is an H 26 suitable for this?

As a h26 owner, I've never sailed blue water for this distance. How risky is it even in good weather? I've thought of a 26 more as a coastal or inland cruiser (not to say it can't be sailed otherwise). Other thoughts?

Try This

Go to www.a1sailboats.com. Captain Jim is a wild and crazy guy that sails MacGregors back and forth to the Bahamas in December. He used to be a Hunter dealer. Check with him, he may be able to line you up with a flotilla going there Good Luck Alan Long S/V Random Access (94 23.5)

H 26 in 5 foot waves. Like kissing a gator.

Last summer we got caught out in a violent storm that we couldn't hide from, run from or duck under. We had 4 to 5 foot waves, not swells and winds at 25 to 30 with gusts up to 40 mph . Couldn't use the OB as it was out of the water more that in and bare poles left us rolling, turning and getting blown towards shore. Finally settled for the jib rolled in and the main on the 3d reef. Only had to do this for about 1 hour. With the reefed main we had steerage and could hold position. No way could you heave to. Would I go 50 miles out with the current state of the art forecasts? Hell no! I truly love our 95 H26 and plan to keep her while we leave next year for a 5 year blue water cruise. But that will be in a 37 foot boat that won't stand on her nose, with her butt in the air, over a silly 5 foot wave. Ray S/V Speedy
