H 26 in 5 foot waves. Like kissing a gator.
Last summer we got caught out in a violent storm that we couldn't hide from, run from or duck under. We had 4 to 5 foot waves, not swells and winds at 25 to 30 with gusts up to 40 mph . Couldn't use the OB as it was out of the water more that in and bare poles left us rolling, turning and getting blown towards shore. Finally settled for the jib rolled in and the main on the 3d reef. Only had to do this for about 1 hour. With the reefed main we had steerage and could hold position. No way could you heave to.Would I go 50 miles out with the current state of the art forecasts? Hell no! I truly love our 95 H26 and plan to keep her while we leave next year for a 5 year blue water cruise. But that will be in a 37 foot boat that won't stand on her nose, with her butt in the air, over a silly 5 foot wave.Ray S/V Speedy
