My bilge pump has recently stopped turning off. I checked the obvious and it is not the float. I even swapped in a new pump. Same problem. I have it connected to a ON OFF AUTO switch. All functions work except for auto off. Dont know why this is happening when for several years everything worked fine.

Sounds like a short in the on-off-auto switch. Take the switch out of the circuit and see if the pump runs when the float switch is open (down).

I installed a rule and or would not turn off. Turns out the manual and auto wires were missmarked or reversed.
Is it an external float switch or a unit with the switch built in?
They make two kinds of external float switches. The expensive on is called a "superswitch" as a way to designate one that actually works. I use this switch and love it. The cheap one does not work, the switch is either too light to guarantee shutting off or the pivot mechanism binds. I had one and threw it away. I have heard people bond pennies to the float to make it heavier to get it to shut off?
I also had a small pump with built in switch I used for my dinghy. This wouldn't shut off either. Makes me wonder if they ever test their products?

my 2200 gph rule was in run positon due to a worn out flapper switch-- they do die-- mebbe, if is the kind you have, might truly need to be replaced....... i had to-- is not uncommon for these to fail after 1-2 yrs of working just fine. goood luck.
I had the same problem with my bilge pump. Turns out the float switch should be mounted 1/4" higher than the bottom of the pump. Mine had been installed at the factory at the same level as the pump, and the previous owner had burned out at least one pump. The higher elevation of the switch ensures that the float will "sink" low enough that the mercury in the switch will open the circuit. I put some shims under my float switch, and it has been working fine.
This is a lot of useful ideas and suggestions. Thanks to all of you and I will take another run at the pump when I get back to the boat. I will up date on results. Thanks again.
