When someone goes thru three rudders, then something is amiss. Hopefully, you read my earlier post.

However, there could be another issue. I have seen people take the boat off the trailer with the rudder fully deployed and hit. I have seen rudders when running aground the owner did not raise the rudder when backing up and it hit hard damaging it but later failed as a direct result of hitting.

However as a former investigator, not enough imformation was given as to the circumstances and I find it is quite unusal for three ruders on the same boat had to be replaced.

Yachtsman;

If you can email me with more details at davecondon@mindspring.com I will be glad to assist. I have logged more time with these boats than anyone. I will explain later and I also use to be an investigator.

Quoddy, Thanks for posting your experience with the shorter version of the Idasailor rudder. Has there been any increase re lack of steerage underway? Have you sailed with this rudder in larger following seas or when heeling and found the rudder to maintain contact? Your post was specific and appreciated.

New rudder Ida

One of the first things I noticed about the boat when we bought it was that it seemed very responsive to the slightest changes in wheel position. As far as I can tell it still is.
At the time of the change I wasn’t taking detailed note of the performance with the Hunter rudder so I could compare it to the Ida. There may be some changes, but I can’t say anything really stands out. It would seem that the Hunter one would be more efficient being longer but Ida says their foil design is superior so this might be something.
To date no significant following sea has been encountered.
I try to stay between 10-15, but have been I would say over 25 and still biting but maybe going soft. When I get over 20 in a gust and heading much further I get pretty busy, so the exact degrees aren’t for sure a fact. I’ve never had it lose its bite, but I haven’t purposely pushed it and watched heel angle closely to see just how far it will go.

Reviewing my earlier post, one other and major cause for failure is leaving your rudder in a partial up postiion as that will put alot of stress on the rudder head. I only did that when going slow when for example putting the boat on the trailer or backing up if running aground. again, not all the data as too why three failures occured but there is a common cause somewhere.

I have sold Hunter 240's and 260's with the orginal rudders. Again when someone goes thru 3 rudders, not all the information is being given which is why I invite anyone to email me and then I call and start asking questions. Once in a while the rudders did fail due to quality control and the mfg. replaced them. Ida sailor rudders are good too but I heard folks breaking those as well and when I helped them figure out what they were doing wrong, no more purchases of new rudders.

In many cases of this magnitude i do have questions and will refrain from further response unless you are willing for me to ask questions. I know the boats too well.

Hunter has referred many to me over the years to include rudders. I do not need to call them as they will tell you I am the expert and again not enough information was given to determine what happenned in this case. It was I who showed the plans of the 23.5 to Hunter.

Further, I use to be an investigator and I try to find the specific cause whenever something occurs. Many comments can be made but to determine the specific cause in this case is critical to avoid that from happenning again.
