Have a saltwater leak from stern area in my 1979 Cat30. Flow rate approximately 2 gal per hour, leaks only when underway. Hose attachments all secure and dry. Suspect packing gland in rudderpost. How do you access and repair it? What size packing? Thanks, Gail Todd

An easy check

While under way, have someone steer your boat while you go below with a flash light. If your rudder post packing is leaking you will see it. That's how if found the problem when it was on my boat.

leak

Gaspare, I had the same problem with my 79 C30 2 weeks ago. When I inspected the area (from inside the boat) while I was underway I found that the engine exhaust thru-hull was leaking sea water from the outside. When the boat is underway, part or that thru-hull was submerged and leaking about 2 Gal per hour. It was a steady stream of water. I removed and resealed the thu-hull and she is bone dry. Good luck.

Common problem..

Paul, that a very common problem on many boats. I also had to replaced the exhaust thru-hull several years ago for the same reason. Years ago I almost sunk a boat when the bilge drain thru-hull started leaking. As I was underway the thru-hull was under water and taking on water. When I noticed an inch of water slashing around the cabin floor I started pumping the bilge. The water was coming back in. Once I isolated the problem it was a slow ride back to the marina keeping the thru-hull fitting above the water line. Always inspect those thru-hulls, especially the plastic ones!
