Pulling my 26 out the rudder lost about an 1/2"on the bottom. Is this going to create enough of a control problem that I should fix it. Should I cover the end with something like new gel coat?

fix it

you should sand the area and determine if and how much of the fiberglass has been removed. Build up the fiberglass back to the original shape and finish with several layers of gel coat. I have sucsessfuly used a fiberglass repair kit from the auto parts store. If you just put on a coat of gel coat you will have that much less material to wear off the next time yu drag the rudder. Belive me it is going to happen again! I wish someone would sell a stainless skid guard for both the rudder and the swing keel.

fix or water damage to rudder

From your description, it sounds like you can see the inner core of the rudder. Before repairing, stand rudder so hole is down to drain any water out and store in warm place so that it is dry when you go to repair it. Otherwise, delamination could occour later. Crazy Dave Condon

epoxy

Every year I apply about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of marine tex epoxy to the scraping area of the rudder and sand it to the rudder shape. This way you are just wearing away the epoxy every year and not the rudder Dave Oberholtzer Hydrotherapy
