Has anyone had problems getting and keeping the rudder down on a Hunter 240. Mostly when motoring.
Thanks

Yes!

When we had our 240, the first season showed how weak the rudder down haul system was. Always creeping up especially when motoring.

Solution: Added a 2-1 system inside the rudder stock using low stretch line. Much easier to lower and keep the rudder down. A trick to tensioning the line is to raise the tiller a bit, cleat the line TIGHT, lowering the tiller back down pulls it even tighter.

Good luck,
Dan

Edit: I also added a 1"OD plastic bushing that sat inside the top of the rudder stock that the tiller attaching bolt went thru, this gave the up haul line less friction as it exited the tube.

Originally the 240 rudder post had a 2 to 1 purchase to help pull the rudder blade down so somewhere along the line after the boat left the factory, someone must have changed out a line and forgot to put the 2 to 1 purchase back in. That was standard on all the boats.
