Rudder versus Centerboard Draft

I have a 22 that I briefly grounded on a sand bar yesterday and the rudder appeared to be the only thing grounded - the centerboard was up and the weight aft was minimal (just myself). I was wondering if the draft of the rudder was actually more than the centerboard in the up position. It is a 1983 model. I plan to go underwater and check it out in warmer weather but it's a bit cold right now! Anyone who may know please advise me. As a follow up, has anyone altered their rudder on this or a similar model to retract?

Take a Look at Specs on this Site

Go to the boat info tab on this WebSite, pull down your model, and you will see the plan and section of the boat....clearly shows the rudder is deeper draft than the shoal keel if your centerboard is up. Your rudder should bump up our of the pintles if grounding lightly (keep a short safety cord attached if you encounter this often and don't want your rudder floating away.

My O'Day 25

I have an O'Day 25, and the rudder on it is a few inches longer than the keel when the centerboard is up. I've run aground maybe a half dozen times, and only once was the keel in the mud, it's been the rudder most of the time.

Draft

The rudder on my ODay 222 is considerably deeper than my keel with the board up. I just slow down when in question of the depth so I don't hit hard. My rudder will swing up but don't do it as I am afraid to turn it into the outboard and damage it with the prop.

Follow up

As I have investigated this in more depth, the 22 rudder does not have any way to modifiy it to swing up (like the 222) does. But on the day I ran aground my centerboard was fully up as I was keeping it up to see how the handling was without it just for fun. Had it been down it would have acted as an early warning device for me!

Early Warning

I have to say, the times I've run the rudder aground, I didn't notice anything from the centerboard when it (assumed) hit first. Just quietly lifted, and the rudder hit.My O'Day 25 also does not not have a kick up rudder.
