HUNTER H34 point lookout long island
Im very interested in any imformation I can get on the different types of rudders produced for the h34. Ive seen only two designs up here on the north shore of long Island, which is like the mecca of sailing around new york, and I would like to know which one is best. I have a 1984 model, which is supposed to have the high performance shape. there is another one up here that is much wider, and actually pivots its chord within a few inches of the edge of the transom. thats huge! mines at least a foot away the last time I looked. there must be allot more presure on the steering post, but does it control a 155% headsail any better. when I get pushed over to 25+ degrees from a big puff, it rounds up pretty bad, and is hard to control back to the original heading. I know I know its easier to reef down to a smaller jib, but like all us I have a need for speed, and I just have to know if this rudder would solve all my problems? My boat loves 8 to 9 knots true, on a beam reach. Helm is between 10 or 2 oclock from center, and close to hull speed, at 18 degree heel. At 10 knots, the helm moves past 9 or 3 oclock, and you can hear the rudder starting to ventilate. would the bigger rudder perform better?
