I have a 1978 Catalina 27. The rudder has a visible crack in the surface on one side from the rudder post down toward the bottom of the rudder about 10 " long. It appears that water got inside the rudder and over the winter froze. any suggestions? I a replacement available? Repair possible? Thanks.

Normally Repair is ok

A good fiberglass repair shop can noramlly do this type of repair-on my old Cal 2-25 after a haul out we found a "Bubble" where water had gotten in. The shop drilled a hole to drain water-dried it out and did the repair-should be able to take care of your crack as well.

New rudders available

Take a look in the archives here and on Cat 27 website or Mainsheet magazine. There are several outfits that make new rudders for 27's. John Booth in British Columbia is probably most well known. His rudder is a higher asect ratio, so (if you're powered by an OB), no more lower unit hitting the rudder. Also reduces weather helm, lots of other benefits. As I recall, it's fairly reasonable, like $600-700.
