Rudder Slamming into Hull

When sitting on the lake with no wind and power boat wake, I always heard what I thought was the centerboard slapping around in the trunk. Turns out, it was the rudder swinging too far forward and hitting the hull. The "turning block" for the rudder line was broken in two pieces and the line was frayed. I removed the rudder to fix these and to see if I could figure out why the rudder was allowed to swing so far forward. It might turn out that replacing the block brings the line to the rudder the correct angle which holds it in place better, but it looks like a design flaw. Any H22 owners encountered a similar problem?

rudder problems

I just took one of these rudders apart to make some repairs and also to replace that block. The rudder should not be able to swing forward far enough to contact the hull. It should hit the front of it's metal housing first and stop. The rope should hold it in this position until you need to raise it. Have you disassembled the rudder to check the bolt hole that the blade is swinging on? Dan
