My 1980 Hunter 30 rudder shaft has slipped and left me with two problems. The first is holding the rudder shaft up in place. Its down about 2 inches, I can push it back but it slips down again. The second problem is that by slipping down, the bottom of the skeg that holds the bottom bushing broke. I was surprised to find the skeg hollow! I'm thinking a brass strap with screws into the skeg wrapped around the bottom along with fiberglass or ??? HELP!!!!!!!

MY '88 HAS...

...a bushing on the lower portion, but where it connects to the quadrant at the top, it has a large, long bold that passes thru the neck receptical in the quadrant AND thru 2 holes, opposite one another in the top of the rudder stock, thereby, the quadrant is joined to the top of the rudder in that fashion. If your's is different, I cannot help you. But, it sounds like the lower bushing must be replaced. That would be a yard job, to me! Because shaft bushings are hard to come by unless you can mfg your own. Good Luck!
