our 1967 Pearson Coaster developed a grinding noise in the rudder shaft assembly after a severe storm at Bullfrog Marina, Lake Powell, Utah. Haven't had a chance to disassemble the upper part of the unit. The boat's in the water. The bottom portion of the shaft is supported by a "shoe" extending from the trailing edge of the keel. The boat is in a remote location and wanting to get advice on what to expect on disassembly and repair before taking off such as what parts/tools we may need to bring with us.

Help with Coaster Rudder

Your problem is most likely damaged bearings. If you can wiggle the shaft in the tube that would be an indication. You will need to remove the rudder. Problem here is to get boat high enough to allow the top of rudder stock to drop out. Secondly the shoe is pinned in with bronze rods which can be driven out with a drift pin

Thanks, Bob, a friend had a Vanguard on Lake of the Ozarks where Ruby came from. lovely boat, hull #162. I presume there are top and bottom bearings. What might these be made of and where might I find them? Any help will be appreciated. Wolf
