When considering replacing a kick-up rudder on a 1988 wing keel, should I stay with a kick-up? I haven't experienced the benefeits of this rudder type yet since my keel draws almost the same as the rudder.

Tony, The replacement blade for the kick-up is cheaper than the standard rudder blade. Should be an easy choice, especially when you factor in any other parts you might have to replace in order to convert to the standard "fixed" rudder. As for the benefits of the kick-up, if you need to get into shallow water for any reason, you'll be glad you had the kick up. Your swing keel will move out of the way if you touch bottom going forward. Wouldn't you want the same for your rudder? I can imagine the damage a rudder would take hitting a rock or something if it was a fixed type. I'd stay with the kick-up if I were making that decision. It's cheaper to replace the blade and more versatile. Dave

Go fixed

I think you said "wing" keel, not "swing" keel. I'd go with the standard fixed rudder, it is less expensive than the kick-up model and if your keel extends the same distance as the rudder then you wont need the kick-up. The keel will hit ground first! Randy

Wing, not swing

My mistake. I mis-read the keel type. For a fixed keel, it's certainly an attractive option to go with the standard rudder from the chandlery on this site given the features and the cost. No splitting, solid (no core of different material), no waterlogging and a lifetime warrantee. Wow! Thanks for the heads-up on that Randy! I'm glad they don't have a blade-only replacement for the kick-up, or I would be kicking myself for buying the one from CD. There's still the question of whether you would need to buy additional parts to convert to the standard style if you have the kick-up style. I wonder if the tiller, tiller bracket and gudgeon size and position from a kick-up style will work with a standard rudder blade.

Decision Made

Thank you for all your comments. I've decided to go with the HDPE fixed rudder advertised in the Chandlery. I contacted the manufacturer www.idasailor.com, and they will build the fixed rudder with the same pintle pattern as the kick-up. Slip-in installation.

Re: Decision Made

Tony, If you don't mind, let us know how it works out when you get the new rudder on the boat. I'm really curious about those HDPE rudders. Thanks, Dave

No Problem

The new rudder is due between June 8-12. I'll post a new topic after I try it out.

HDPE stands for "High Density Polyethelyene". Go to the link provided.
