A couple of weeks ago we had a good thread on rudder repair. I took mine apart, sanded and painted it, and got the red rubber gasket material suggested. I'm looking for a source for the white, 1/8", plastic like material. It is used on the upper part of the rudder housing cheeks where the tiller is attached. Does anyone know just what it is and where to get it? Mine is cracked and very brittle.

Hunter - Mike Thomas

I just ordered and received the plastic shims (flat plastic parts) and spacers from Hunter. They charged $18 for the shims and approximately $12-14 for the spacers. The high price appears to be because each part is hand made. If you hade the nylon stock, they could be easily homemade. The shim is from nylon sheet and the spacers are solid nylon rod drilled out for the bolts. To buy from Hunter, contact Mike Thomas, email: mthomas@huntermarine.com. Merry Christmas! BrianW

UHMW

For my H23.5, I bought a 12x24 piece of UHMW from an industrial plastics company. I think it cost $3 or so. I didn't have the right tool to make nice smooth curved cuts, but managed to do well enough. I'm pretty sure that I called the factory and was told they use UHMW. However, the guy told me "UHMW, such as Delron". When I contacted the plastics company, it turned out that Delron is not UHMW but something quite different. Just now, I failed to find out what Delron is made of after 10 minutes of Googling. UHWM is much easier to find in small quantities, and cheaper, so I went with that. It's been two years now, and it seems to hold up. UHMW stands for Ultra High Molecular Weight polyethylene. The link below is just one picked at random from a Google search. There are many variations of UHMW. The link below doesn't mention it, but I believe there are blends to provide higher UV protection, for example. Given the location of the shims, I don't think UV exposure is a big deal, not for $3 worth of plastic, but I'd opt for it if available. ...RickM...

Spacer?

Are you referring to the nylon sleeve like tube that is in the rudder that the tightening bolt runs through? The threaded stove bolt that runs through it really reemed out that piece. I have a shop making me a stainless sleeve and trying to find me a stainless stove polt that is not threaded the first couple of inches from the head. Thanks for the lead on the shim material.

Fun with Dick's bolt

Dick - I think you're talking about the rudder bolt, not the tiller bolt, but I had the same problem with the tiller bolt. The threads wallowed out the hole in the tiller tube itself. All you need to do (probably for both cases) is buy one the next size up (1/2" longer), and cut off 1/2" of threads using a hack saw. This gives you the longer shoulder so the tiller tube doesn't get wallowed out. Before cutting off the threads, put two nuts onto the bolt. Then after cutting of 1/2" of threads, try to dress up the rough end with a file, then take off one of the nuts. This will straighten out any imperfections left. File again, then remove the 2nd nut, etc, and you'll have a clean end. ...RickM...

H26 Rudder Repair

The H26 Rudder is considerably different from the H260 rudder; however I wonder if there are similarities that both boats share. At any rate this thread looks like something that would be good for the H26 Knowledgebase. It would be a shame to let this info disappear into the archives never to been seen again.... http://kobernus.com/hunter260/rudder/rudder.html
