Anybody has an idea how to remove rudder in 1979 28ft O'Day. Have some play and want to see how to fix it.

how to

Christopher: You don't say if you have a wheel or a tiller. If you have a wheel: here goes. Basically all you have to do is to pull the center through-bolt which goes through the rudder shaft and the rudder housing in the boat. before that, though you will need to LOOSEN the four rudder quadrant bolts which attach the rudder to the wheel steering system. I repeat loosen these only enough to "drop" the rudder out of the boat. You will need someone on the ground to lower it. While you are inside the lazaret loosening all the fasteners, support the rudder with something so it won't drop till you're ready for it to drop. Lastly, the boat will need to be raised high with the travel lift or you will have to dig a hole to lower the rudder into. If the boat is in a cradle or on stands then the rudder is too close to the ground to successfully lower it. Good luck Mike S/B Pitterpat, Lake Huron

Thanks Pitterpat

Thanks for tip. I have a wheel. Boat is out of the water, I just wander how long is shaft inside boat (that means how deep hole I would have to dig). Does it have sleeve bearings? Any specifics to watch uring removal and reassambly? Thanks again.
