For the past five years, we have been sailing our '76 Mariner. I would like to rebuild the rudder for the upcoming season. The rudder is in less than good condition, from being hit by the outboard motor (British Seagull). I think that it is made of teak, but I'm not sure. Can anyone tell me where to find the correct type of wood to use for this project? I would also like to install a new cable system in the rudder when I rebuild it. Where can I find that as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Stuart Marine

Bob - I'd start your project with a call to Stuart Marine in Rockland, Maine. 207-595-5515. As you may know, they still build the boat, albeit with a different deck and house. They used to offer manuals, drawings, etc for the older boats. As far as what type of wood, I'd go with glued up 2x2 mahagony or similar then shape and cover with epoxy. Might be more cost effective to order from Stuart, though. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Rod Johnson,

D & R Marine also has parts

Rudy at D&R MARINE sells the Mariner rudder parts, I'm not sure how his rudders compare pricewise with Stuart, but they will be as good or better than the O'Day originals. Justin, the Mariner built by Stuart is not tremendously different from the last ones built by O'Day, one difference may be the deck at the stern, O'Day built to take outboard, Stuart uses a bracket. Cabin is the same as last O'DAYs.

Where are they?

Justin and Rod, Thank you both for the info. I was able to find Stewart Marine, but was unable to locate D and R Marine. Do either of you have a web site or phone number for them? Thank you both for the help.

D & R Marine Contact Info.

Let me jump in if I may: Contact information for: D & R Marine P.O. Box 921 31 Mill St. Assonet, MA 02702 Phone: (508) 644-3001 Fax: (508) 644-3002 This address information is somewhat old, but I believe is correct... I know the phone number is right. I don't beleive D & R has a website as of yet. Every O'Day owner should keep this information handy... I have not had a need to contact Rudy, but scored points with a former boss of mine who asked me where to get an OEM mast for his Daysailer 1 after his son capsized in thin water a couple years back. He had nothing but good things to say about the prompt, friendly and affordable service he received from D & R.

Rudy's website (I think he has two now)

www.odaysailboats.com. You can order direct from DandR Marine. There is a page devoted to rudders. Also I recently got an e-mail from Rudy announcing another site. I'm not at my home computer so I don't know that web address. Maybe someone else can come up with it for you. Tom
