I purchased the Hunter last fall - just in time for winter storage. Once it was back in this spring we found the quadrant and rudder shaft could move vertically ~ 1 1/4 inches! This allowed the dog to climb past the stop and bind up on top of the limiting stops. We belive the rudder was replaced ( we are the third owners ), and possibly the quadrant was incorrectly installed. Is there something else that limits vertial movement available on the rudder? I have installed a spacer under the quadrant, clamped on the shaft and made temporary stops that are taller so we have good registration preventing rudder over travel. Any experience with this type of issue?

Call Hunter Marine

Just call Hunter. They are very helpful. You may not get someone when you call, but they allways call you back. Good luck.

Very surprised ..

..this wasn't picked up by your inspection surveyer. I would check the lower rudder post bearing also. It will limit upward movement while the top bearing limits downward movement.

Wondering about rudder -bearing construction

No the Surveyor never noted this issue, but I did notice the seemingly large distance between the hull and top of the rudder while the boat was in the cradle for the winter. I will call hunter again, but wondered how the rudder/shaft assemblies are made. Is there any chance the rudder shaft can move within the rudder? What is the bearing arraingement? Just wondering how I could get so much axial free play.

Bearing setup ?

Thank you, I e-mailed Hunter and got a quick response - but no schematic or other information outlining the bushing setup. I will check the lower rudder post bearing as suggested, but am not sure what I would be looking for, also it is a bit hard to check with the boat in the water.
