I have a 82 C27, and Im im the yards, I have never pulled the rudder off. I notice there is water weeping from the rudder tube, there is minimual side to side slop <1/16", Is there any bushings or packings I should take care while it's out?

Not really...

If water is weeping from the post, most likely it is seeping out of the rudder, which may indicate more serious problems. There might be water in the rudder, which might mean the welds could be compromised. Hard to make a good call without taking the rudder apart, which is a big job. A test might be to drill a very small hole on the bottom edge and see if anything pours out. If it does, you've got a problem. If it doesn't, things might be OK. One item written up in Mainsheet a few years ago dealt with sealing the joint between the rudder and the post with epoxy. The minimal play seems normal.

Rudder Question?

I had the same issue with my C27 rudder which is a 1975. I am now in the process of rebuilding the boat, so I decided to rebuild the old rudder also. I had noticed other repairs from previous owners. I did drill holes and allowed the water to drain out the first year I took owenership (1999). The rudder worked fine with some water in it that season. I did notice some rust on the steel after I removed the skin & the foam from the rudder getting it ready to ship to the rebuilder. I now awaiting the return of my old rudder which has just been rebuilt by John Booth in Victotia B.C. I am hoping my total cost will be less than $400.00 U.S. including shipping etc.. John shipped it last week, so I haven't seen it yet. I think you need to plan on a 45 to 60 day turn around for this entire process. I believe if you check the C27 files you will find other stories about Mr. Booth's skills at rebuilding old rudders. His phone # (250)386/9622. All the Best & Good Luck, Jim.

The Booth Rudder

I used to have a Catalina 27 and had a rebuilt rudder done by Booth. It worked great. Just like he said it would.Much less weather helm and much better boat handling. Never had to use two hands up at my neck again when a little overpowered.

Rudder problems

Go for the Booth rudder!I put one on my '76 last year and I can't believe how it changed the way the boat handles!I now have an almost neutral helm even in a blow, and better windward performance.
