Rudder problems

I keep my 240 slipped, but have always raised the rudder when not in use (to keep it from slapping around in winds and wakes). Also I have always bungeed the tiller to one side for additional protection to keep it from slapping around. Sunday, everything was wonderful when I lowered it, sailed and raised it at the end of the day. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to go out on the boat and, as I got everything ready, I lowered the rudder. This time something different happened: it started gurgling like an empty beer can when you push it under water (i.e. it seemed to be taking on water and displacing air). I raised it and saw and alarming amount of water pouring out of it. When I inspected it, I found that the seam along the leading edge of the rudder had split from top to bottom, rounding the bottom and starting up the trailing edge! No visible signs of damage to the rudder (as one would expect if if was hit). It simply split! Anyway, it is solid foam core and I'm wondering if anyone has a good idea on how to repair this. I am considering fiberglass tape along the seam and then gelcoating over that for appearance sakes; but how solid will it be with the foam core split on the inside the way it is?

give Hunter a call

I believe this has been discussed on the forum previously. It seems to be a "common" problem with 240/260 rudders. Some have posted that Hunter has replaced the rudder under warrenty...

Solutions!!!!

Thanks for your post, Al! I talked with Greg at Hunter and he's sending a new rudder free of charge. This is one more reason I will always sail a Hunter!!!!

Lower edge on Swing keel

I was crawling under the boat doing some trailer work and noticed the bottom edge of the swing keel looked "opened up". My boats a 1998 240. I wonder if Hunter will help with repairs on that?

They might

Give Greg a call 800-771-5556. He's a very helpful guy. If it's something they've been having trouble with, then he'll know it. As far as the rudder goes, it was something, as AL pointed out, that they had trouble with in later model boats but wasn't usual with the 2000 model. That's why I had to send pictures and all so he could see.
