I keep my 240 slipped, but have always raised the rudder when not in use (to keep it from slapping around in winds and wakes). Also I have always bungeed the tiller to one side for additional protection to keep it from slapping around. Sunday, everything was wonderful when I lowered it, sailed and raised it at the end of the day. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to go out on the boat and, as I got everything ready, I lowered the rudder. This time something different happened: it started gurgling like an empty beer can when you push it under water (i.e. it seemed to be taking on water and displacing air). I raised it and saw and alarming amount of water pouring out of it. When I inspected it, I found that the seam along the leading edge of the rudder had split from top to bottom, rounding the bottom and starting up the trailing edge! No visible signs of damage to the rudder (as one would expect if if was hit). It simply split!Anyway, it is solid foam core and I'm wondering if anyone has a good idea on how to repair this. I am considering fiberglass tape along the seam and then gelcoating over that for appearance sakes; but how solid will it be with the foam core split on the inside the way it is?
