I have recently experienced some rudder problems on a Hunter 460 where the rudder became loose on the rudder post. I am wondering if others have experienced problems with a rudder becomming loose on a rudder post, thus causing squeeking in the linkage and in the binnacle.

Please Clarify

Are you saying that the fibreglass rudder is rotating around the carbon fibre rudder post or are you hearing squeaking when the rudder moves?. If the rudder is no longer firmly attached to the post, you better take immediate action before it separates completely. If there is squeaking, lift the floor behind the wheel and locate the source of the squeaks and lubricate as needed. Could be the rod bearings in the linkage. Also check your autopilot. If the drive chain was too tight, you may have an autopilot bearing problem. Its located in the wheel housing below the pull out storage box in front of the wheel.

Same Issue 376

Jim, I am not sure that the same rudder system is utilized on the H376 - 1998. Our rudder is 100% fiberglass. There are two cylindrical stainless steel sleeves epoxied to the fiberglass. The lower sleeve is the bearing which sits inside the rudder casing. The upper sleeve recieves the holding shear pin and quadrant. We heard clicking and found movement between the upper sleeve and the fiberglass adjacent to where the quadrant tightens on. This was on a brand new rudder not two months old. Hunter rep told us there is no warranty on rudders. They are abused too often and can not stand behind this problem. Let me know if your problems fits this scenario. Mike D
