I have uncovered a mystery surrounding the keel and rudder on my 1980 H33 that I need help with. Apparently the keel was cut for shoal draft with a counterweightlead torpedo. This modification left the rudder longer than the keel, so the rudder had been cut off approximately 24 inches. I have found the original manufacturer of the rudder and will have one built but I will be faced with the same problem of a rudder longer than the keel. I have considered a skeg in front of the rudder to protect it but dont know who could engineer something like that. Maybe there is something I could attach to the keel torpedo to make it longer than the rudder. Any ideas what I should do and who could fabricate it?

Can you send me info on the rudder manufacturer. I don't need one now but it's good to have a source should things change. FYI I've seen h33's with and without a skeg on the rudder perhaps Hunter's customer service could scare up the plans. Good Luck

ARe you sure 2ft is gone off the bottom? Here is a photo of my 79 H33 showing the relative positions of original shoal draft keel and original rudder. The shoal draft does have bottom of rudder about even with bottom of rudder.

How my 1980 Shoal Draft was modified
Bob, I answered a similar post from Vero Beach in the mid-size Hunter section of the forum. As Terry said the shoal draft is about equal to the rudder in depth. I had a boat repair shop cut off 7 inches from the bottom and add 7 inches to the back of the rudder. But, if you have a draft of less than 4.5 feet you may have to cut more off. Or, as you suggest add to the keel. Bolting a steel rail to the counterweightlead torpedo might add enough depth to cover the rudder and offer the keel some protection also. Interesting problem, please tell us what you finally do.
