Rudder post tube replacement

Having suffered from a prolonged and annoying leak from what I thought was the packing gland of the rudder post, I asked that it be repacked when the boat was pulled last week to paint the hull. Upon further inspecton after removal from the water, it appears that the tube through which the rudder post extends has suffered electrolysis and is the source of the leak. Has anyone had any experience with this problem? I sounds to me as though this will not be a simple fix. thanks in advance....

It turns out the nut cannot be tightened down on the tube because the threads are stripped. So it appears that the only alternative is to remove the tube and replace with a new one. Seems to me they will have to "cut it out", and re-glass the hull.

rudder tube packing nut

Jeff, Sam Lust posted quite a bit of material years ago about a badly corroded packing nut on his H33 rudder shaft tube. Could be that your packing nut is the culprit, rather than the threads on the tube itself. You may want to get in touch with Sam though I don't remember him posting much in quite a while. pulling the whole thing out will be such a big $$$$ job. good luck.
