Well i finally took to a task that at least brings through my 36 from bow to stern. Drop the rudder, while on the hard, about 7 " was able to remove
rudder coller, hatch and disassemble quardrent. Released stuffing box and
rubber coller in that order. Took two trips to boat, about 4 hours total & 2 beers.
Next step, reglass lower bilge area around fg collar and down around the area of bilge that the screws from the rudder water deflector poke through
(never felt comfortable with that ) and install new rubber collar(3"id exhaust hose) new clamps and re pack stuffing box. This will just about complete
my bow to stern items thta have needed attention. PO's have never addressed any issuses I uncovered. Never the less I so much enjoy digging into how Trinity was built and making her sound for years of sailing to come.

And you dropped the rudder why Joe? I also was uncomfortable with those screws just going into empty space(didn't know the 36 also has those deflectors). I shaped a 2 x 6 and glassed it into the space. Eventually I removed the deflectors completely and glassed over the holes. How much alike are our boats back there(pictures)?

Hello Ed,
I dropped the rudder so I could slide the machined coller over the top of the rudder post, along with the 3/4" plywood hatch(rardi knows of this piece), once removed, the quaderent is exposed. Your pictures of the 37 are very similar except my helm deck
thru hull is closer to my engine compartment then that shown on your picture. The deck discharge shown in your picture is where my exhaust is going through that area.
Give or take a few inches aft.
I had noticed the ss clamps rusting and a greenish (water indicator) hugh on the stuffing box , also more water( not alot) in my bildge on certain days with alot of engine pushing(stern sitting down) that is was time to figure out what is going on
with the rudder assembly. So that is where I am in this spring prep.
The empty space is probably identical, 2x6 is a good idea, i will consider.

Regards,

Joe,

Joe/Ed:

Here's a link to a thread from last spring which contained a drift to the anti-turbulence flaps topic. I've also attached again a picture of my rudder post area. Different from you guys, on my 1980 H36, I could not identify that any of the flap attachment screws penetrated all the way through the hull. Instead they looked to have been into the solid fiberglass lay-up right at the end of the skeg.
