2 30 tall rig Kemah
We recently bought a 1985 Catalina 30 and it had some slack in the steering. When I went below to try and tighten the cables I found that the pulley on the rudder post was riding (grinding) on the lower side of the support bracket. If I try to lift the rudder post/pulley by hand, I can raise it about 1/8 - 1/4 inch. There is another set of holes in the bracket, so I could lower it about 1/2 inch moving the pulley to about the middle of the slot in the bracket. But I'm afraid that the rudder post and pulley will just drop further.

Does anyone know what might have caused this condition, and what is supposed to keep the rudder post in place?

Also, one of the plastic "end caps" clamped onto the end of the cable conduit has borken. Seems like I should be able to clamp something else in its place. Looks like its only purpose is to keep the conduit from being pulled through the support bracket. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks,
Todd

Ish - salt water?

My '80 std. rig doesn't look that corroded, but it's always been in fresh water. Is it possible something is leaking on your innards? Maybe a good cleaning and oiling is in order or even a rebuild.

Did you resolve this issue? Curious myself.
