I am wondering if the rudder post on my 1978 Cat 30 shuold have some play in it i.e. it seems to "float" in the housing. Is this common to the model or should I replace the bushing? The steering itself seems to work well with about I/4" of play in the wheel but I am more concerned with the post tending to move up and down a bit. Sometimes motoring in calm water I can hear and see te post moving about.

On my '78 Cat.30 my rudder post was loose.I made a new bushing for it. Next time you haul it out check the bottom bushing also, I bet it needs replacing. I understand this is a common problem on older Cats. it's a easy fix.
