I have just purchased a 81 hunter 25. There is a collar around the rudder post under the tiller where the post comes out of the fiberglass. It look like white plastic. I only have half left. What is the purpose of this part? Anyone know of a sourse for this part? Thanks? Love the look of this boat!

Rudder post collar

I believe what you are refering to is the same as on the '27.The purpose is to keep the rudder and post from dropping down when not in water.Rudder is made of foam and fiberglass with high bouyancy which keeps it in position while in the water.Just about any machinest that has a lathe can make you up one with ease.

I'm assuming you have already contacted Hunter,if not,try them and Foss Foam who more than likely made the rudder for Hunter.

Hi Kenny, Congrats on your new purchase, may it bring you years of joy! I remember a previous thread regarding that pesky plastic collar. One person said he'd made his own out of Starboard. The one on my '82 is lookin' mighty worn & fragile, so buying/fabricating a new one is high on my "to do" list also. Post often! I'd like to see more H25 activity on this website. I switched from a Catalina 25 to an H25 in April, and have been disappointed that there isn't a stronger owner's group for our boats. I still post regularly on the Cat 25 site because I can get lots more advise and feedback there than I can here. Of course, there were ten times more Cat 25s built than H25s, so you'd have to expect a more active group. Still....... Randall

Thanks all.

Thanks for all the replies. I contacted hunter and they confermed what it was but don't supply the part. My newphew has a machine shop so I will have one made I guess. What is Starboard and where might I find some? Any other material recomendations. Aluminum? Since you need one to Randall maybe I'll have two made up

Rudder bearing

OME was nylon, and I had to replace mine in my '81 two or three years ago. This part holds the rudder in place so when you remove the old part make sure you have someone to support the rudder. I made my new part out of teflon, which seems to be weathering pretty well but not great. Be aware that the bottom of this donut sits on a teak surface, is indeed a bearing part, and must be smooth for your rudder to move cleanly. Hope this helps, Jim

Looks like it was two pieces

I thought this part was broken but as I look at it close it looks like one half piece of it is missing. Was this part one piece? I guess their would be no way to install it as one piece? Maybe if the tiller assembly was completely removed. Thanks for replies guys. I really love this boat.

Rudder post bearing collar

One of the first things I did upon buying this 27-yr-old boat several seasons ago was to ascertain that all the rainwater in the bilge was coming through this thing. I stared in disbelief at it, both because I hadn't realised it was leaking that badly and because I couldn't believe Hunter had done it that way. The collar is laid-up fibreglass about 1/4-inch thick and drilled with 4 holes for self-tapping screws. Mine was parted from the rudder shaft and admitting rainwater by the gallon. I just backed out all the screws and held it up whilst squirting enough 5200 around it and under it to hold back Niagara Falls. It has never been a problem since. Be careful fashioning a replacement out of just anything. This collar really does secure the top end of the rudder stock to the cockpit. Without it the tube can flex at the upper end and eventually weaken the fibreglass (which never takes well to flexing). I never even thought to support the rudder. The rudder head actually rides on the top of the tube itself which protrudes through the collar, which is how the collar secures the cockpit and rudder tube together. One easy and important improvement to this system is to crawl under the lazarette and fibreglass the rudder tube to the underside of the cockpit. This was not done at the factory since the rudder tube was installed prior to the deck going on and in production they do not have out-of-shape creeps like me crawling under there with a bucket of activated resin and a roller and a wad of mat tape. But fibreglassing this would add considerably to the strength and stiffness of the whole boat. Also it would render the fibreglass collar unnecessary because any rainwater would just run down inside the tube and out the rudder hole at the skeg. The way I fixed mine is probably the best way. Even if yours is in two pieces, just make sure they are fitted together properly and then do not spare the 5200. --JC 2 cherubiniyachts@aol.com

getting two made

Well my nephew had some nylon stock that looks to be an exact replacement for this item. I believe it was one piece that just broke where the pin goes through the rudder stock. I am having him make two of these things so if Randall or anyone else is interested let me know. I'll charge 1/2 of what he charges me.
