Does anyone know the rudder post length on a 1980 C30? I have 38 inches of clearance from bottom of rudder to the pavement and need to drop and remove rudder for repair. I can't dig a hole (I don't think the marina would be to happy)! I estimate I'm very close to having room to drop it.

Rudder removal

Not sure whether our boats are of the same dimensions (we have an '88 Catalina 30 MKII). I've dropped the rudder with the boat in the yard sitting on it's keel with only about one (1) inch of wood underneath it. I've read many times that you need to dig a hole or require a LOT of extra height to drop the rudder, but I've done it twice with only the normal yard method of blocking the boat. Even had a discussion with a yard worker who told me I could drop the rudder when I didn't think there was quite enough room ... turns out he was right.

Re: Rudder removal

I am curious...how much does the rudder weigh? What method did you use to hold it in place while removing the steering mechanism?

This is something I am going to have to do in a few weeks. I have an 88 C30 tall rig.

Thanks

Re: Rudder removal

I have Catalina 30 tall rig and did remove it two years ago as I had moisture in the rudder. I think the beast weight about 70 pounds. To remove it I had a strong person jiggling the rudder under the boat while I took out the bolts. Lots of fun. . . even more fun when I re installed it. I'm still not comfortable with having the right cable tension but it sails fine.
