I have just agreed to take ownership of a 1975 27' Hunter - (I convinced myself it would be great for my kids to learn all about boat repair…). In the cockpit, as you enter from the stern, is a well, (approx. 18"x18"x22"deep) and the rudder post protrudes through the front-wall of this well, approximately 8" high. This post, is right behind where a person stands that would be steering the boat. My question, was there a chair or bench that went over this post? Its hard to believe that it was designed this way - however it is easily accessible in the event the tiller needs to be used... Thanks, Don

That's where the tiller goes

Assuming you have the original tiller steering, there is a bronze fixture that mounts on/through the post, and to which the rudder mounts. This gives you an excellent seat on either side, when holding the tiller.

The back of the cockpit is a normal place to mount the tiller - is there something I am missing?

You'll love the boat - it's a great small cruiser. We have put over 5,000 nm on ours.

Sounds like some sort of modification. These boats typically had a tiller system. But there were some wheel steering systems.

A picture is worth 1,000 words!
