Rudder post crack

Recently we found water ingress via a crack on the top of the rudder post, our boat is a 2006 Hunter 36
Have others dealt with this problem?
I understand it implies some sort of hard contact of rudder with a log or other large item while sailing or the bottom of the anchorage, etc

Sounds like the next step is to see if the shaft is bent or the rudder damaged. Time for a haul or a swim. Also, can the section between the hull and this floor be inspected?

Boat will be out of the water for inspection
From the stern cabin, after removing panels, the tube that holds the rudder post does seem to be intact
No water ingress when we are not sailing, apparently it happens when heeled and water pressure on system increases
