On our 1979 Hunter 30, when I open the emergency tiller locator, I can hear and see a little bit of play in the shaft as it rotates. I have not grounded the boat in the two years that we have owned it. The shaft is rubbing the wood that is sort of a guide under the seat. Is this new noise the rudder possibly out of line, or has that wood just swelled to now it rubs the shaft due to the small play? Any help appreciated.

Easy Fix

On my 28.5 (hope this helps) the rudder shaft come's up through the rudder tube. If you take it all apart you find the bottom washer a big white donut type washer needs to be screwed down to the wood it rest's on. On my 28.5 I found ther were only 2 screw's holding the rudder shaft in place one broken which let the rudder shaft wobble around. You will need to remove the steering quadrent and the sterring cables to get to this. YOu will need to remove everything and be carful not to let the rudder drop out of the boat if not sure what your rudder is made of. When you have removed it all remove the last washer it is about 3-4 incher round is just a big plastic donut. Take this donut drill and counter sink about 8 holes evenly spaced. Now screw this into the wood that it rest on but only do one to make sure you get the rudder in the right place. If after you have installed 2 screw's and the rudder is where you want it screw in the rest of them and reinstall all you removed. Rmember to lay a layer of grease inbetween the washer just so it moves smoothly. Cliff

Question regarding Boot.

I am curious as to how to take off the boot covering the nut and washer assembly on the rudder post. I assume this is above the water line so no fear of instant sinking....
