Where to get pintles/gudgeons?
The ones they show on defender seem to be a little different than the ones I remember using to repair the pintles/gudgeons on my little 14' day sailor. Theirs have the pintle that attaches to the hull and the gudgeon (hole that slips over the pin) on the attaches via straps to the rudder whereas ours was the other way around with the pintle attached to the rudder. I am sure it will work either way.Part of the reason that these pieces failed is that they can end up under a lot of strain in windy conditions (when you least want your rudder to fail). The piece that ripped out was probably not well attached in the first place (do not use just screws). I encourage you to get as heavy duty pintles and gudgeons as you can as you do not want to worry about this happening again. Oh, in the future you should carry an oar you could use as a sweep oar just in case they do fail. That is how my friend and I got back across the LI Sound with a broken gudgeon when I was in my roaring 20's in a 14' sailboat. Trust me on this. There is some cheap replacement hardware out there I just looked at on the West Marine website and some that wa$ better. Sometimes you just have to pay if you want a high quality part. I also own a 19' Lightning sailboat that came with pretty heavy duty rudder hardware. I would recommend these if I knew how to get them. Check with a local Lightning sailboat owner. The best ones I could find on the web were at Annapolis Performance Sailing. Scroll down to RaceLite fittings and check the extra heavy duty stuff out. Not too expensive either.http://www.apsltd.com/Tree/d3000/e727.aspA much crappier selection can be found athttp://www.defender.com/category.jsp?path=-1|118|297677&id=299217Good luck.
