Rudder on Oday 30

I recently had to remove my rudder to do some work on my prop shaft. The only thing securing the rudder post in the boat was what appeared to be a 38 bolt that ran through the post and both halves of the rudder quad. It would appear that this in the only thing keeping the rudder from falling out. Is this correct, has it been a problem, and has any one seen a different attachment method? Any info is appreciated. That isn't correct

True there is a 3/8 bolt over the glass tube.BUTif you have a tiller the bolt thru thu tiller fitting will also keep it from coming out. if you have a wheel there should be a capfitting for the emergency tiller attachment which should have a bolt thru it. the bolt inside should be through a wear collar. I have a 1979 and I've never had a problem. however this should be greased at least once a season. it should be noted that you should grease the fiberglass tube a couple of times /season to cut down on the wear.

No Need to Worry!!

I own a 1982 O'Day 30.This past winter i had to remove my rudder to replace my shaft.Yes, there is only a 3/8 high strength stainless bolt holding the rudder and post.The Edson steering Quadrant splits into two pieces held together by six bolts. four 3/8" bolts and two 1/4" bolts on each end.There is a hard nylon bushing between the quadrant and the top of the fiberglass rudder post support. Near the bottom of the fiberglass post there is a grease fitting. I used superlube to grease the post. Superlube is not effected by salt water.It is a excellent marine grease. When I reassembled my steering quadrant I used a longer 3/8"bolt then the original, a washer and a Nylon locking Nut. You have to believe the chances of this 3/8 bolt to break or shear off would be impossible. To give me a piece of mind i used the nylon locking nut. Good Luck and fair winds!!
