Question for you H260 sailors. A couple of times while we were sailing along the rudder started coming up. No we were in 50ft of water. It appears the rope on the cleat was slipping due to lots of pressure on the rudder, so up it came. I don't tie it down just in case of... I was wondering after looking at the rudder. There is a second hole that allows the rudder to be pinned at a raised level, say about half way up. Last time we were in the water I checked to see if there was a hole when the rudder is all the way down, NOPE no hole. We typically stay in deep water at least 6ft or greater. How about drilling a hole for when the rudder is all the way down and forget cleating the little sucker. If we go shallow pull the pin. Anyone see any problems with this? Shear pin

Can't remember where I saw it, but I have heard of people putting a small wooden dowel thru the rudder to hold it down. If the rudder should hit bottom, then the dowel shears and the rudder pops up. Keep a couple extra dowels around as spares. Also, choose a dowel size that is small enough to shear when needed, but large enough not to fail when just sailing along. I'd start by drilling small holes for small dowels and then seeing if you could make them shear by pulling hard on the rudder. Keep increasing size until you can't break them anymore.

Foam Core

There is probably some foam coring in the rudder. Get som specs from hunter to make sure you don't drill through the coring.

ruddeer bolt

My 260 has a nut with a bar welded to it so I can tension how easly the rudder will come up. I have set it so there is no problem sailing and yet pops right up when I release the rope. I keep mine cleated or it won't stay down but it I hit bottom it will release enough so as not hurt the rudder. A dept sounder is a nice addition as well. Corky(MeriCay)

Spring tension

I have used spring tention for a couple of years. We put our boat on a lift and the water in some areas is fairly shallow. I pull the down tension line over the top stanchion cross member and hook to a spring attatched to the top base plate for the rudder. I hold the spring in place with a light piece of line so it is ready to recieve the line. Jeff Peltier
