Looking for anyone with information on rudder/tiller play that I am experiencing on my 1973 Catalina 27. It is my first year with the boat. Is it normal to experience slight "play" ?

Same problem/question

I too have just purchased a 73 C-27. The tiller has some play and you have to anticipate which way the rudder may move. Also, I'm coming from a 20' keel boat where the tiller is like butter. The Catalina seems to be extraordinarily stiff. Is that normal?

Rudder issues

My 75 Catalina 27 tiller is not stiff at all and I experience no play. In fact, I was trying to think what would give you play as the whole thing is "direct link" for lack of a better term. The original rudders suck by the way - I still have an original - so if you are going into a cash outlay for your rudder, it might be time for an upgrade to a better rudder.

Catalina rudder

I have heard good things about the Booth rudder manufactured by John Booth, Booth Enterprises, 781 Fairview, Victoria B.C. V9A 5V2 Canada. Tel 250-386-9622. He will refit your rudder to his new shape. The original rudder on my 78. The original rudder is not balanced and is terrible in reverse with my Honda outboard. I am planning to have my rudder replaced--over the winter. Presently thre is slop in the head and a little wear in the bearing, but steers smoothly.
